Mothers Day Gift Flower Potting Project

Mothers Day Project

The only potted plants and flowers that I found more personalized and detailed and not so " generic" looking were the ones from the Florist. Not being able to afford the "nicer" flower baskets and florist gifts this year, I decided to make my own Mothers Day Floral Gift.

I always had a large area of flowers, flower beds, pots and hanging baskets near and at my fruit market. I planted and maintained them myself. So I do have some experience with potting flowers.

I didn't have any problem finding everything at one store. I went to on of the larger chain dept. stores with a huge Yard and Garden dept.

You can have fun with this, be creative and mix it up, its your mom and you know what she likes. I went shopping at a store that had a large garden dept., and lots of plants and flowers to choose from.

For Mothers Day, I decided on a rather large-approx 18-24 inch Terra-Cotta color plastic basin planter to start with for around $9 .

For the larger basins it takes quite a bit of medium, so save your self an extra trip to to store and "over buy" on the plant medium (you can always use the rest later for another project or throw it on your own flower garden) I probably spent about 5 or 6 bucks here.

I bought the kind with everything in it. (not the black potting soil)

I threw about 4 good size handfuls of large rock and gravel in the bottom of the planter before I added the planting medium.

Besure to do this, if you don't, the water will not drain properly and will kill your Mothers Day Flowers project.

Fill your flower pot or planter up well with your plant medium, shake it down well press firmly to settle the plant medium. 2 inches from the "dirt" to the top edge of the pot is perfect. It gives plenty of room for absorption of water, and allows for
aeration of the plant.

Also you'll want to read the labels on your plants before you buy and mix them, full-sun, full-shade partial-sun or shade, etc.

I had approx $25 in the whole "pot my own flowers" project. Previous to this I had spent about $60 at the florist for the same approx size and plants. Mine looked much nicer, and cost much less. And I really enjoyed putting this together it was fun!

Mothers love Flowers. My Mothers Day Gift was a smash hit, and I got the biggest bang for my buck.
