Eat Right for Weight Gain

Weight Gain Tips For Men

Here are some nutritional tips to help head you in the right direction.

Make sure you have protein with every meal. Good protein sources for weight gain are eggs, milk, lean meats, Peanuts and Peanut Butter, cottage cheese, any lo-fat cheese (Swiss Cheese is naturally lower in fat) yogurt, Whey Powder . Go easy on the fatty meats as you want to gain weight but not by adding allot of fat to your Diet.

Avoid trans fats, and limit saturated fats.

You will need a Calorie counting book relatively inexpensive usually 2 or 3 dollars. Write down everything you eat, and how much for a week. Add up your daily caloric intake. Now start off adding at least 500-600 calories to your usual daily caloric intake by eating healthy foods you like to your diet.

Carb Up

You will have to up your caloric intake, the more calories you burn the more carbs you will need.

Eat Good carbs like whole meal breads, potatos, brown rice, fresh and dried fruit. Don't worry so much about limiting your carbs if you are trying to gain weight.

You Need Healthy Fats in your Diet

Olive oil, Sunflower oil, Safflower oil, the oils found in fish and nuts. All healthy oils you need in your diet to help keep your heart healthy.

Snacks

You are probably going to want to work up to 3,000-3,300 cals pretty quickly to gain weight. And try to keep the daily caloric intake consistent . If you have a blender you can make your own lo-fat high protein shakes. Use lower fat milk, a banana, some yogurt if you like or just lo-fat milk and a banana is good. You can change up your protein shakes by adding some blueberries, strawberries, and raspberrys.

Eat protein between meals to up your gains

High protein snack food- boneless skinless chicken breasts sliced thinly, then grilled will cook in just a few minutes. (overcooking will make chicken breast dry and chewy) Adding some lo-fat cheese makes a tasty high protein snack on whole grain breads. Also you can add a little BBQ sauce or mustard, lettuce and/or tomato. (It's your sandwich you know what you like)

Tuna salad sandwiches are delicious low-fat high protein. Another great way to eat tuna is drain the tuna and set aside. (in oil or water-your choice) Wash off a few nice fresh lettuce leaves. Arrange the lettuce leaves on a salad plate. Then put 1 cup of cottage cheese in the center of the lettuce, cut a medium size tomato up into bite size slices and add that to your salad. Top all this off with the can of tuna that you drained. This makes a pretty big snack so you can scale it up or down to suit your self. Have a few multi-grain crackers to give this salad some extra crunch.

Ground Round is also good grill food for weight gain it's good lean red meat. Ground round also tends to be dry if you over cook it. You can cook either of these meats in a pan, just spray lightly with Olive oil. Cook over medium low heat till done.

Pamela Sarzana, this is a very useful and informative hub, especially for guys who want to increase their "muscle weight". Now, are you going to write a hub for those of us who want to decrease our weight, so our six packs will be visible again? :-)

I'm no authority on weight loss for Men, but If you can cut some calories from your diet ..start small , be reasonable start out with maybe 200 calories less a week then try to move up to 500. (after tracking how many calories you are eating for a week) Men have an advantage over women because they have more muscle mass, muscle do burn calories, fat don't. You have to create a calorie deficit, meaning you have to burn more cal's than you are eating in order to lose weight.

Pamela, thank you very much for the suggestions. I am going to follow them and, quite fortunately, I do not have far to go. I am not really overweight; I just need to work on getting my "hard body" back. :-)

This is interesting Pamela. My husband has been losing weight, and I'm trying to "sneak" more healthy foods into his diet. I don't need to gain weight (sigh) but lost quite a bit a few years ago and am maintaining. Yogurt is my best friend. They have great flavors now, and I can almost pretend it's ice cream!
